My Understanding of Beauty
a person with fine character may be considered as a beauty.it is not because of ones charming appearance, but because of ones honesty, kindness, and strong will. and these qualities do fill us with admiration and respect. mother teresa is a good eample, as is helen keller.
the scene of sunrise is usually thought of as a beautiful moment, for it brings people brightness and warmth and it indicates hope and a new beginning. you may feel refreshed, inspired and full of energy when watching such a scene.
in my eyes, beauty means such things that can arouse many of humans wonderful emotions:appreciation, respect, encouragement, etc. www&8226;
however, i realize that the society has a great impact on my understanding of the beauty.
it is true that the history is advancing and the human society is developing. as a result, humans thoughts are changing gradually. so it is with our understanding of beauty. yet we live in a physical world, many objects, which witnessed this progress, can still be found. building is one of them. after observing and contrasting the buildings of different times, we may notice the differences in their architecture.the earlier ones seem more magnificent and splendid while the modern ones emphasize on practicality and amenity. we can easily find that the standards of beauty from these buildings are not the same.
furthermore,we also livein a mentalworld.so we shouldnt neglect the dissimilarity understandings of beauty caused by various cultures.
influenced by "taoism and buddhism", the chinese always regard silence and implication as beauty while more western people refer frankness and independence. besides, most chinese like classical music and chinese painting when western people are fond of pop music and oil painting. we may also feel the difference from the literatures.
in a word, the understanding of beauty is affected by many factors. but i believe that the humans pursuit of beauty is endless and the true beauty will not disappear as time goes by.
Of all the knowledge we have, some comes from the books we read, some comes from personal experience in our lives。 Different people attach different importance to different sources。 The young and the educated, for example, may emphasize the former, the old may, however stress the latter。 In my opinion, both book knowledge and personal experience are of equal importance。
Knowledge gained from experience may be firsthand, direct, and unforgettable。 Books in the library may be outdated, giving you useless information。 Everything is changing and so is knowledge。 If you go out to make on the-spot investigations instead of depending on books, it is likely that you may be pleasantly surprised。 Moreover, knowledge you get from your own experience will be everlasting。 Therefore, it is important that students get involved in practical activities to accumulate different kinds of experience。
Experience, however, is limited in terms of time and space。 It is impossible for anyone to experience everything to get the knowledge he needs。 In addition, society is developing so fast that new problems come up with surprising speed。 Over depending on experience could, therefore, make a person narrow minded and prejudiced。
Books are a summary of the wisdom of our ancestors。 The best way to gain know ledge is, of course, to read books, and in the meantime, participate in various kinds of practicaL activities。 A combination of the two will sure[y make us full and well informed。
Many students spend money in a quite extravagant way. They see things they like and they must have them, no matter how expensive: clothes, jewelry, shoes, facials, hair and nails for girls; clothes, watches, shoes and electronics for guys. It seems that many students reach university and go a little wild with all the freedom after the stress of high school.
There are two differing opinions about this phenomenon. Some feel that it is fine for students to have a little fun; after all, they can only enjoy their lives in college, since after graduation, there will be nothing but work, work, and more work. Others, however, frown on the extravagance; college is, they point out, the period when people form habits of independent living, since it is probably the first time that most children have been somewhat independent from parents.
In my opinion, we college students need to have some restraint in our spending habits. Most of us are still financially dependent on parents, but we are preparing for independence very soon. If we get used to spending extravagantly now, the adjustment to adult life will be extremely difficult.

As is known to us all, time spent at university is an utter worthwhile and important period in our lives. In the period, we can enjoy the colorfulness of university life; at the same time, the experience and challenges provide us a good chance to know and understand ourselves so that we are easier to find our positions in the future.

For one thing, a variety of knowledge and experiences provide a convenient way and chance to broaden our horizon and strengthen our ability in many areas. At university, we can search and receive various knowledge concerning different subjects by many ways, such as library, internet and so on. Besides, attending many kinds of activities is a good choice to improve our communication skills and widen our interpersonal relationships. The more people we get in touch with, the more ways can we get and learn to get along with others. Only in this way can we learn how to deal with others in relationship.

For another, the experience and challenges we meet in university have a great impact on our personality forming and the understanding for us. In this period, we will form some opinions and understandings about ourselves after experiencing some matters and meeting some challenges; meanwhile, some certain characters and values which will affect and even determine our choices of position in future will be shaped and formed.
Therefore, we should try our best to catch up the chance to study at university and value the time at university so that we will have no regret for our life.
Dear Zhang Wei,
I’m glad to know that you are coming to my city during the summer vacation.
However, I’m afraid there’s some bad news. I’m planning to take part in an international conference to be held in another city during the time of your visit. All the top scientists in my field will show up at the conference. More importantly, I’m lucky enough to have been selected to give a speech on behalf of my research team at the Conference. I really can’t miss it.
I understand that it’ll be your first time to this city and I’m your only friend here. I’ve asked my roommate to meet you at the airport, and you can stay in my room. He is a very nice person and he will show you around the city. Hope you two will get on well and have a nice holiday!
Yours,
Li Ming
Its Time to Stop Software Piracy
Its Time to Stop Software Piracy China has often been criticized for the rampant practice of software piracy. Take a look around. We operate on pirated Windows systems, defend PC security with pirated Kaspersky anti-virus programmes, process files with pirated Microsoft Office, draft 3D designs with pirated AutoCAD, refine pictures with pirated Adobe Photoshop, and study English with pirated Kingsofts electronic dictionaries and translators. Its no exaggeration that pirated software is everywhere。
The logic behind the phenomenon is simple and clear: if a pirated copy is available for just a tiny fraction of the normal price, not to speak of many of the free downloads online, who would pay for an authentic copy? Cheaper prices aside, easy access is another important factor. With such a large gathering of pirated upgrades around, who would bother to spend time and money searching the stores for an authorized yet outdated version?
Despite these apparent benefits, the practice of software piracy should be banned, because it represents unfair competition and by nature its a no-win situation. But how? Two approaches are to be taken at the same time: Technically, software developers should enhance their antipiracy engineering, so that cracking the software should be virtually impossible. And legally, the government should also tighten its antipiracy laws and toughen up the penalties, so that violations should be costly。

The Argument
Lulu didn’t want to go to the play. This Wednesday was going to be very busy. She had realty meetings and clients to drive around. Called “Narnia,” the play was based on the novel by C.S. Lewis. It was a musical. “You know that I don’t like musicals,” she told Walt. “I can never understand what they’re saying when they sing, and the music is not that good, either.” He told her that there were a lot of great musicals, famous just for their music if nothing else. She asked when he was going to take her to one.
Well, he said, someone had told him that this play was the one. She still said that she’d rather not go. He argued that they only went to a play once every two months, so please be ready. He would pick her up the next day at 7 p.m.
Throughout the next day, he thought about the play—maybe Lulu was right. He called up a couple of friends to ask if they had seen the play, but they had not. At about 6 p.m., he had the bright idea to Google the play. Sure enough, he found a site that contained music samples from the play. He sampled about six tunes; they did nothing for him. Lulu was right, he thought, at least about this play. He was going to call Lulu, but just then his sister called him. They talked for at least half an hour.
Walt finally called Lulu at 6:55 p.m. “You were right, honey,” he said. “The music is not very good. So let’s not go to the play, if that’s all right with you.” That was great, she said.
“So, let’s go to a movie,” she suggested.
“A movie? When?”
“Right now!” she said. She was all dressed up, and she was ready to go somewhere! But he wasn’t. He had already decided to stay in. "How about a movie tomorrow?" he asked.
“Tomorrow!?” she yelled over the phone. She was furious. Did he have any idea what a difficult day she had had, trying to finish all her realty work so that she would be ready by 7 p.m.? And then he had the nerve to call her up at 6:55 to tell her to forget it? Forget it?! Had he thought about calling her up earlier? Had he thought about asking her for her opinion before deciding everything on his own? “Of course not!” she said as she answered her own question. This was just one more example, she raged on, of how he had absolutely no respect for her, and she was tired of it. “We’re through!” she shouted just before hanging up.
the bustle of the hospital was a welcome distraction as i opened my new patients chart and headed for her room. my son, eric, had just brought home a disappointing report card, and my daughter, shannon, and i had argued again about her getting a drivers license. for the net eight hours i wanted to throw myself into helping people who i knew had much more to worry about than i did.
rebekah was only 32, admitted for chemotherapy after breast-cancer surgery, when i entered her room it took me a moment to spot her amid the bouncing forms of three giggling little girls.
i told rebekah i would be her nurse and she introduced her husband, warren; si-year-old ruthie; four-year-old hannah; and two-year-old molly. warren coaed the girls away from their mother with a promise of ice cream and assured rebekah they would return the net day.
as i rubbed alcohol on her arm to prepare it for the intravenous line, rebekah laughed nervously. i have to tell you im terrified of needles. itll be over before you know it, i said. ill give you a count of three.
rebekah shut her eyes tightly and murmured a prayer until it was over. then she smiled and squeezed my hand. before you go, could you get my bible from the table? i handed her the worn book. do you have a favorite bible verse? she asked. jesus wept. john 11: 35. such a sad one, she said. why?
it makes me feel closer to jesus, knowing he also eperienced human sorrow.
rebekah nodded thoughtfully and started flipping through her bible as i shut the door quietly behind me.
during the following months i watched rebekah struggle with the ravages of chemotherapy. her hospital stays became frequent and she worried about her children. meanwhile i continued to contend with raising my own kids. they always seemed either out or holed up in their rooms. i missed the days when they were as attached to me as rebekahs little girls were to her.
for a time it had seemed rebekahs chemotherapy was working. then doctors discovered another malignant lump. two months later, a chest -ray revealed the cancer had spread to her lungs. it was terminal. help me to help her through this, i prayed.
one day when i entered her room, i found her talking into a tape recorder. she picked up a yellow legal pad and held it out to me. im making a tape for my daughters, she said.
i read the list on her pad: starting school, confirmation, turning 16, first date, graduation. while i worried how to help her deal with death, she was planning for her childrens future.
she usually waited until the early hours of the morning to record the tapes so she could be free from interruptions. she filled them with family stories and advice?trying to cram a lifetime of love into a few precious hours. finally, every item in her notes had been checked off and she entrusted the tapes to her husband.
i often wondered what i would say in her place. my kids joked that i was like an fbi agent, with my constant questions about where theyd been and who theyd been with. where, i thought, are my words of encouragement and love?
it was three oclock one afternoon when i got an urgent call from the hospital. rebekah wanted me to come immediately with a blank tape. what topic has she forgotten? i wondered.
she was flushed and breathing hard when i entered her room. i slipped the tape into the recorder and held the microphone to her lips. ruthie, hannah, molly?this is the most important tape. she held my hand and closed her eyes. someday your daddy will bring home a new mommy. please make her feel special. show her how to take care of you. ruthie, honey, help her get your brownie uniform ready each tuesday. hannah, tell her you dont want meat sauce on your spaghetti. she wont know you like it separate. molly, dont get mad if theres no apple juice. drink something else. its okay to be sad, sweeties. jesus cried too. he knows about sadness and will help you to be happy again. remember, ill always love you.
i shut off the recorder and rebekah sighed deeply. thank you, nan, she said with a weak smile. youll give this one to them, wont you? she murmured as she slid into sleep.
a time would come when the tape would be played for rebekahs children, but right then, after i smoothed rebekahs blanket, i got in my car and hurried home. i thought of how my shannon also liked her sauce on the side and suddenly that quirk, which had annoyed me so many times, seemed to make her so much more precious. that night the kids didnt go out; they sat with me long after the spaghetti sauce had dried onto the dishes. and we talked ? without interrogations, without complaints?late into the night.

Many people almost cry their eyes out when watching some soap playsthrobbed with love themes。Love is the key element that leads a couple before the sacred altarof the church。

However, in the past, many people got married without their ownconsent in China. Their marriage was arranged. Tow persons, a man and a woman, who were entirely strangers, were united in wedlock and became husband andwife. They had known nothing of each other before, and of course, love was asealed book to both of them. This type of marriage often led to unhappiness. Tragicstories of ill-matched were common enough.
Nowadays, it is held by many people that one should not marrywithout love. A man and a woman may freely make friends with each other. Theydo not talk of marriage until their friendship has ripened into love. In their marriage, they may take other things into consideration, but they regard love as the mostimportant thing. This type of marriage usually brings happiness.
Moreover, love may be a temporary passion, and those who are in loveare often blind to other things, so that what we call love matches do notalways result in happiness. Therefore, while love is required before a marriageis arranged, it is not the only thing required.
