1. Now utopia has grown unfashionable， as we have gained a deeper appreciation of the range of threats facing us， from asteroid strike to epidemic flu and to climate change. （2013. 閱讀。 Text 3）

【譯文】隨著我們對人類面臨的威脅有更加深刻的了解，如流星撞擊、傳染流感和氣候變化，烏托邦如今已成昨日黃花。

【析句】本復合句由主句和as引導的時間狀語從句組成，主句為utopia has grown unfashionable，時間狀語從句中，threats facing us為現在分詞作定語，相當于which face.from……to……常用于舉多個例子。

2.The potential evolution of today's technology， and its social consequences， is dazzlingly complicated， and it's perhaps best left to science fiction writers and futurologists to explore the many possibilities we can envisage. （2013.閱讀。 Text 3）

【譯文】今日科技面臨的潛在革命以及可能造成的社會后果極為復雜，或許最好還是留給科幻小說家和未來學家來探索人們可預見的可能性。

【析句】復合句的主干為The potential evolution……and its social consequences is dazzlingly complicated，and it's best left to science……futurologists……，可以看出本句由兩個成并列關系的句子組成，第一句是簡單句，第二句中又包含省略了that的定語從句we can envisage.

3.As so often， the past holds the key to the future： we have now identified enough of the long-term patterns shaping the history of the planet， and our species， to make evidence-based forecasts about the situations in which our descendants will find themselves. （2013. 閱讀。 Text 3）

【譯文】通常說來，過去是通向未來大門的鑰匙：我們現在已經發(fā)現眾多塑造了地球歷史和物種的長期模式，有足夠證據對未來我們的后代所處的環(huán)境作出預測。

【析句】多重復合句，主句為the past holds the key to the future，冒號后闡述具體內容，主謂賓為we have identified enough of the long-term patterns，shaping the history of the planet and our species為現在分詞作定語修飾patterns，to make……situation是目的狀語，in which則引導定語從句修飾situations.
