Why does the writer not understand the porter?
I arrived in London at last. The railway station was big, black and dark.
我終于到了倫敦;疖囌竞艽螅趾谟职
I did not know the way to my hotel, so I asked a porter. I not only spoke English very carefully, but very clearly as well.
我不知道去旅館的路該怎么走,于是向一個搬運工打聽。我的英語講得不但非常認真,而且咬字也非常清楚
The porter, however, could not understand me. I repeated my question several times and at last he understood.
然而搬運工卻不明白我的話。我把問話重復(fù)了很多遍。他終于聽懂了
he answered me, but he spoke neither slowly nor clearly. 'I am a foreigner,' I said.
他回答了,但他講得既不慢也不清楚。“我是個外國人,”我說
Then he spoke slowly, but I could not understand him. My teacher never spoke English like that!
于是他說得慢了,可我還是聽不懂。我的老師從來不那樣講英語!
The porter and I looked at each other and smiled. Then he said something and I understood it.
我和搬運工相視一笑。接著,他說了點什么,這回我聽懂了
'You'll soon learn English!' he said. I wonder. In England, each person speaks a different language.
“您會很快學(xué)會英語的!”他說。我感到奇怪。在英國,人們各自說著一種不同的語言
The English understand each other, but I don't understand them! Do they speak English?
英國人之間相互聽得懂,可我卻不懂他們的話!他們說的是英語嗎?

1.Do the English speak English?(標題)英國人講的是英語嗎?
English在這里均為名詞,但意義不同。第1個指“英國人”,為總稱,后面的動詞必須用復(fù)數(shù);第2個指“英語”。指語言時前面不加冠詞,指人則要加the:
The English often talk about the weather.
英國人經(jīng)常談?wù)撎鞖狻?/p>
Do you speak English?
你會講英語嗎?
English還可以作形容詞,表示“英格蘭的”、“英國的”、“英國人的”等:
He was English.
他是個英國人。
與English相似的單詞有French,Chinese,Japanese等:
I said good morning to him in French.
我用法語向他問早上好。
2.I arrived in London at last.我終于到了倫敦。
。1)這里L(fēng)ondon前面不加冠詞,介詞in暗指London是個大地方。
。2)at last為固定短語,表示“終于”,一般暗指經(jīng)過一番等待、麻煩(苦惱)或努力之后:
It was my turn at last.
終于輪到我了。
I repeated my question several times and at last he understood.
我把問話重復(fù)了很多遍。他終于聽懂了。
3.I did not know the way to my hotel…我不知道去飯店的路該怎么走……
my hotel不是指屬于我的飯店(或旅館),而是指我已訂了房間或者要去住的飯店。
4.I not only spoke English very carefully, but very clearly as well.
我的英語講得不但非常認真,而且咬字也非常清楚。
not only…but…as well這組連接詞與not only…but also是同樣的意思,都表示“不但……而且……”,not only與but后面的成分必須對等。課文中的這句話可以改為:
I spoke English not only very carefully, but very clearly as well.(意義不變)
Mary not only found her aunt, but stayed with her for two weeks as well.
瑪麗不僅找到了她姑媽,而且還在她那里住了兩星期。
(連接整個謂語)
as well這個短語本身的含義是“也”、“又”、“還”:
If you go home tomorrow, I'll go as well.
如果你明天回家,我也回。
He lent me his pen, and his dictionary as well.
他把鋼筆借給了我,還有字典。
5.… he spoke neither slowly nor clearly.……他講得既不慢也不清楚。
否定連詞neither…nor…(既不……也不……)連接的成分必須對等:
Neither the boss nor his secretary is flying to New York.
老板和他的秘書都沒有飛往紐約。(連接兩個主語)
I met neither Jane nor her husband.
簡和她的丈夫我都沒見到。(連接兩個賓語)
6.My teacher never spoke English like that!我的老師從來不那樣講英語!
like在這里是介詞,表示“像”、“像……一樣”:
There's no one like you.
沒有人像你一樣。
He speaks like a foreigner.
他說話像外國人。
語法Grammar in use
并列句的語序(Word order in compound statements)
在第1課的語法中,我們學(xué)習(xí)了簡單陳述句的語序,它一般為:主語+動詞+賓語(可有可無)+狀語(可有可無,分為方式、地點和時間狀語,位置相對比較靈活)。通過并列連詞可以把幾個簡單句連接起來構(gòu)成一個并列句。在并列句中,各分句要根據(jù)上下文的要求按邏輯次序排列,但各分句都同等重要并獨立存在。我們常常把并列句中的各分句看成是并列主句。常用的并列連詞有:and,and then,but,so,yet,or,both…and,either…or,neither…nor,not only…but also/but…as well等。這些并列連詞可以用來表示另加(and)、對比(but,yet)、選擇(or)、連續(xù)(and then)以及結(jié)局或結(jié)果(so)。并列句基本上保留了簡單句的詞序:
主語動詞狀語連詞主語動詞賓語
You can wait here and I will get the car.
你可以在這等我,我去找車。
and前面一般不加逗號,但其他連詞前則一般要加逗號:
Jim speaks Spanish, but his wife speaks French.吉姆講西班牙語,而他妻子卻講法語。
I've got a cold, so I'm going to bed.
我得了感冒,所以我要去睡覺。
當并列連詞連接的成分相同時,通常不再重復(fù):
He either speaks French or understands it.
他或是會講法語,或是懂法語。(主語相同,省略)
Either you or I can eat the apple.
這個蘋果或者是你吃,或者是我吃。(謂語相同,省略)
Both Mary and Jane understands English.
瑪麗和簡都懂英語。
當both…and,either…or和neither…nor連接主語時,謂語動詞與后一個主語保持一致:
Neither Liz nor I teach mathematics.
莉茲和我都不教數(shù)學(xué)。(第2個主語為I,所以teach后不加-es)

1.wonder
(1)vt.,vi.感到驚訝,感到詫異:
They wondered that there was a modern building in that district.
那個地方居然有一座現(xiàn)代化建筑,他們感到很驚訝。
He wondered at the beauty of the old town.
這座古老小鎮(zhèn)的美麗令他驚訝不已。
。2)vt.,vi.(對……)感到疑惑/懷疑,想知道:I wonder/I'm wondering if we've made a mistake.我懷疑我們是否犯了個錯誤。
I wonder what will happen next.
我很想知道下一步會發(fā)生什么事。
Will he come to dinner? I wonder.
他會來吃飯嗎?我懷疑。
。3)n.奇跡,奇觀,奇才;驚奇,驚訝:
Jane is a wonder. She never fails in her examinations.
簡是個奇才。她從來沒有考試不及格過。
She looked at the boss in wonder.
她驚訝地看著老板。

2.each other
從原則上講,這個短語指兩個人“互相”:
You and I must try to help each other.
你我兩個人必須盡力互相幫助。
有時,這個短語也可以用來指許多人之間“互相”:
We must all help each other.
我們大家都必須互相幫助。
