英語作文 篇1
Dragon Boat Festival 5th day of the 5th lunar monthQu Yuan
The Dragon Boat Festival, also called the Duanwu Festival, is celebrated on the fifth day of the fifth month according to the Chinese calendar. For thousands of years, the festival has been marked by eating zong zi (glutinous rice(糯米)wrapped to form a pyramid using bamboo or reed leaves) and racing dragon boats.
The festival is best known for its dragon-boat races, especially in the southern provinces where there are many rivers and lakes. This regatta(賽舟會)commemorates the death of Qu Yuan , an honest minister who is said to have committed suicide by drowning himself in a river.Qu was a minister of the State of Chu situated in present-day Hunan and Hubei provinces, during the Warring States Period (475-221BC)(戰(zhàn)國時期). He was upright, loyal and highly esteemed for his wise counsel that brought peace and prosperity to the state. However, when a dishonest and corrupt prince vilified Qu, he was disgraced and dismissed from office. Realizing that the country was now in the hands of evil and corrupt officials, Qu grabbed a large stone and leapt into the Miluo River on the fifth day of the fifth month. Nearby fishermen rushed over to try and save him but were unable to even recover his body. Thereafter, the state declined and was eventually conquered by the State of Qin.
The people of Chu who mourned the death of Qu threw rice into the river to feed his ghost every year on the fifth day of the fifth month. But one year, the spirit of Qu appeared and told the mourners that a huge reptile(爬行動物)in the river had stolen the rice. The spirit then advised them to wrap the rice in silk and bind it with five different-colored threads before tossing it into the river.During the Duanwu Festival, a glutinous rice pudding called zong zi is eaten to symbolize the rice offerings to Qu. Ingredients such as beans, lotus seeds(蓮子), chestnuts(栗子), pork fat and the golden yolk of a salted duck egg are often added to the glutinous rice. The pudding is then wrapped with bamboo leaves, bound with a kind of raffia and boiled in salt water for hours. The dragon-boat races symbolize the many attempts to rescue and recover Qu‘s body. A typical dragon boat ranges from 50-100 feet in length, with a beam of about 5.5 feet, accommodating two paddlers seated side by side.
A wooden dragon head is attached at the bow, and a dragon tail at the stern(船尾). A banner hoisted on a pole is also fastened at the stern and the hull is decorated with red, green and blue scales edged in gold. In the center of the boat is a canopied shrine behind which the drummers, gong(銅鑼)beaters and cymbal(鐃鈸)players are seated to set the pace for the paddlers. There are also men positioned at the bow to set off firecrackers, toss rice into the water and pretend to be looking for Qu. All of the noise and pageantry creates an atmosphere of gaiety and excitement for the participants and spectators alike. The races are held among different clans, villages and organizations, and the winners are awarded medals, banners, jugs of wine and festive meals.

英語作文 篇3
I
There was once a Piers family, and the father of the group divided his son’s equally between them for properties.
One greedy son named Cassim, married a rich wife and of course got rich himself. The other one, named Ali Baba, was not half of greedy as his brother was, married a poor wife and remained as poor as usual.
One day Ali Baba went to town where he knew there was a wood in the end; he brought with him three mules and an axe to load wood. Ali Baba only finished loading half his mules with wood, when he heard a thumping sound coming from not far away; he thought it was in the fields.
As they came nearer and nearer, Ali Baba began to feel more like they were robbers. So he decided to leave his mules and save himself, and he climbed up a tree nearby, and waited until the robbers went away.
Ali Baba was patient, and waited for the robbers to go away; after the robbers tied their horses to the fence in town, they came under the tree which Ali Baba had left his mules; he found the robbers approaching a big rock, and found the head standing in the front of the big rock. And then pronounced the words, “Open sesame!” the mouth of the cave immediately opened wide, and the robbers went inside; the head went in last. After a few minutes Ali Baba found the robbers coming out with bags in their hands, since the head went in last he came out first that is for sure! And then the head stood at the mouth of the cave again, and pronounced the words, “Close sesame!” and the door immediately closed shut very tightly. And then robbers hopped on their horses, and galloped away through the fields.
Ali Baba stared at them for a long time until he couldn’t see them.
So Ali Baba got down from the tree, and went to the big rock. And as he knew the words, he pronounced, “Open sesame!” the door immediately opened. Then he went inside. To Ali Baba’s surprise, he found a golden chamber, and in it was gold and diamonds of all kinds! Ali Baba couldn’t even believe his luck!
II
Ali Baba quickly got as many bags of gold as his mules could carry, and then put them in the sack; after that he placed the wood upon the gold so firmly that the gold couldn’t be seen.
Then Ali Baba rode home with his mules, and carried the wood with bags of gold into the house. After placing them on the floor, his wife came out with porridge, “How are you today?” asked his wife; Ali Baba smiled, “Better than usual,” then he quickly poured the wood out, and under it was bags of gold. Ali Baba’s wife was also astonished to find their good fortune. Ali Baba was pleased as well.
His wife loved the gold so much, that she wanted to know how many pieces there were. After dinner, his wife began to count, but Ali Baba stopped her and said, “Wife, as much as it is to hear but you will never finish counting; if you don’t finish today and wait for tomorrow then you will have to start from scratch again.”
“You are right husband, but I still want to figure how much we have. How about this, I will go to your brother Cassim’s house and borrow a measure, and then measure how much we have, okay?” Ali Baba agreed, for he was almost the person in the world to find out how much they have.
And so the next morning Ali Baba’s wife went to Cassim’s house to borrow a measuring bin, Cassim’s wife came out and said, “Sister, we have lots of measuring bins; you are welcome to borrow any one of them.” And then she went to the basement, and got a bag of measuring bins, and then Ali Baba’s wife picked one and went back to her house. When she approached, she knelt down and began to measure. After a short time, she went to Cassim’s house again to return the bin, without noticing that one piece of gold coin stuck to the bottom of the bin. “Here you are sister,” she said as she put the measuring bin down, “I have finished using it.” And then went away.
Cassim’s wife did not take long to realize the piece of pure gold coin. She took it off and called Cassim, “Husband, I know you suspect that you are a rich fellow; but your brother Ali Baba is ten times as rich as you, he does not count his money; but measures them.”
Cassim looked at the gold coin and knew at once, “Ali Baba just pretended that he was a poor fellow and borrows anything we have,” Cassim was not even pleased at his brother’s good fortune, but was the opposite. And then Cassim led his wife for Ali Baba’s house, “Ali Baba, tell me, where did you get all of this good fortune.” At that moment, Ali Baba knew that the secret had been spread though his own wife’s stupidity. “Look Ali Baba, if you don’t tell me where you got this gold; I shall tell everybody, and not only will you get no more, but you will have no more gold in the rest of your life! Ha!” laughed Cassim.
And Ali Baba told him where he found the gold, and even the words he knew about how to make the door open and shut. And Cassim woke up early the next morning, and took with his ten donkeys to fill the gold. He arrived at the place where Ali Baba had told him, and pronounced these words, “Open Sesame!” the door instantly opened wide, and inside of course; he found a chamber of pure gold, and in it was gold.
Cassim filled as many bags of gold as he wanted. But when the robbers arrived he was still filling. When the robbers found out, they used their swords and soon killed him.
III
After the death of Cassim, Ali Baba wanted revenge from those terrible robbers, and so thought of a plan. When his wife and he finished their porridge, Ali Baba used his money to buy as much oil as his three mules could carry; and then disguised himself as the king’s peasant.
In the afternoon, Ali Baba tied the jars of oil to his three mules, and then set off to where the rock is. When the robbers arrived they saw Ali Baba in the disguise of a peasant, they said, “Dear king’s peasant, we wish to let you move aside, so that we could get something that could make our life-a-a-a-better,” “Okay dear boys, but first I want you to have some of this oil which is fresh made. They are very cheap.”
The robbers argued with Ali Baba until they said, okay, but first you step aside while we get something in the cave; and then come out to buy some oil;” then they drove Ali Baba away for about a kilometer away from the rock, and then went back to get their money. The head of the robbers said, “Open sesame!” and the door flew wide open, and then they walked inside. After a short time they came back, they loaded some wood so as to pretend they went there just to get wood; and then rode off to where Ali Baba stood staring at them eagerly.
“Okay king’s peasant,” said the captain of the robbers, “We shall drink the oil in which you requested us to do;” and so Ali Baba gave them each a scoop of oil to drink, and then went back himself.
The next day he went to where the robbers lived, since oil can make people dizzy, they probably should wake up very, very late. And so he took with him a can of white paint, and painted their house door with it; then without a word to say, he carved, “Put the robbers in jail, they stole some money and pretended that they were nice!”
After a short time he found the robbers waking up, and then dressing up. They found out all the people in town were staring at their door, they thought, “Look Erick! They must think our door is pretty indeed. ”And then all the robbers went out and waved here and there without even noticing the signs on their door. And so they had to be arrested. After a few minutes when they opened their eyes, they were in jail. And they had a guard to guard the lock, they couldn’t get the keys and come out.
The robbers were not happy, but they said, “Chill up,” to every other robber because they had a sick plan.
IV
Now, the robbers had a sick plan; and they took their own gloves, and put on a glass; after that the sun shone through it which made lots of flames in the air like a whirl between the south, and the gate opened.
When the robbers escaped, they immediately ran to town; when everybody was asleep, they crept quietly to Ali Baba’s house, and found some money. The head said, “He stole some; let us get him, for I am sure that he is the one who had the idea!” and then they thought of a clever plan, but they did not know that Ali Baba, was a thousand times more smart than either of the robbers.
And once they crept in, they hid in one of the empty jars of oil and stood there quietly, the head of the robbers went to Ali Baba’s room. After he went in there, he grabbed his sword, and was just about to kill him when Ali Baba quietly opened his eyes and saw him. He pretended to sleep. And when the captain of the robbers was tired, he decided to have a rest, and rested on the floor.
Ali Baba then got up and out a stuffed animal in there, and then got out of bed and to the jars of oil. When he found out that in it were robbers, he began to stamp his feet. “Is that you head?” asked one of the robbers, “Can we come out now?” “Yes Erik, you can come out,” but before Erik the robber lifted out his head, Ali Baba grabbed a knife and killed Erik, and then tied the other jars on his three mules; and threw them into the pond nearby. So Ali Baba had killed all of the robbers.
When morning came, the head of the robbers woke up. When he found that his other mates were gone, he ran away leaving his sword on the floor. With this sword Ali Baba trained to be a knight and became richer as he grew older.
