It is generally accepted that we all need leisure time to recover from the stresses of work and everyday , I prefer to be active during this time, as I think this suits me better. However, what we do with our leisure time is up to us and no one can say that any particular activity is the best.

Some people relax by watching movies, reading or surfing the internet. People who have physically demanding jobs may choose these types of activities. If you are a nurse or builder, you may feel that you dont want to do a five-kilometre run after work, because you are already physically tired.

Other people do very sedentary jobs. Computer analysts, for example, may spend all day sitting in front of a computer screen. At the end of the working day, they may be keen to stretch their limbs and improve their health by swimming or going to the gym.

Another factor that influences our choice of leisure pursuit is whe...

Modern people are living a disposable lifestyle in which the discarding of products that have not been used for a longer period of time is the norm. This essay will discuss why this is happening and what issues will be caused. There are two factors responsible for this trend. One of them is the rapid advancement of technology. Since the first Industrial Revolution, technology has been developing at an alarming rate, leading to the fact that products are becoming cheaper to manufacture and purchase, which makes it highly possible for consumers not to value what they possess compared with people decades ago. Another reason is that people are living in a consumer society which encourages purchases. In order to have a high selling volume to generate high profits, consumer psychology is used by merchants to design a range of tempting advertisements .Therefore, surrounded by such attractive information, people cannot help but to dump old products and buy new ones.

This human behaviour, however, is likely to exert negative influences. For one thing, the environment is detrimentally impacted. With an increasing number of products thrown away, different parts need to be dealt with, but whatever method is employed, pollution is still caused. For example, landfill will take up massive areas of land, and some substances will not degrade for centuries. Also, incineration generates carbon dioxide, which damages the air quality. For another, keeping on throwing away old products and buying new items means that a great amount of money has to be spent. If this continues and people are unable to make enough money, they will find their life unaffordable. Some people make use of creditcards, but end up living in debts. In conclusion, the formation of a throw-away society is attributed to a jump in technological development and the appearance of a consumer society. Such a society, however, maylead to environmental degradation and a big financial burden on people’s daily life.

Topic:The increase in the production of consumer goods results in damage to the natural environment. What are the causes of this? What can be done to solve this problem?

  Sample answer:

The high demand of consumer goods has led to the depletion of natural resources as well as environmental degradation. How to reverse this situation should be paid more attention and both the government and individuals should take responsibility for this.

The past decades have witnessed the expansion of human population, which results in the ever-growing requirement for various products such as food, clothing. Not only does this cause the decrease of natural resources, but also contributes to environmental deterioration. An example of this is that people cut down more trees for disposable chopsticks and furniture, leading to deforestation in many areas. This further causes some problems like soil, erosion, droughts and change in temperature.

Another reason is that people lack environmental awareness. Otherwise, they would not live a throw-away life and cause some avoidable waste or pollution. A large number of people have not yet realized the importance of recycling, nor are they conscious of the households appliances can end up in landfill sites and these non-biodegradable products can have a destructive effect on the environment.

To cope with this problem, governments should firstly try to raise publics awareness for environmental protection and recycling. Besides, they should also invest heavily in some renewable energy resources such as nuclear, solar or wind energy. Meanwhile, ordinary people should make an effort to consume less and recycle more and classify rubbish in order to reduce the damage of waste.

To sum up, the increase of world population and insufficient environmental consciousness are associated with the issue stated. And to combat with it, every member in the society should take actions.

The charts below show the main reasons for study among students of different groups and the amount of support they received from employers.

The bar charts compare students of different ages in terms of why they are studying and whether they are supported by an employer.

It is clear that the proportion of students who study for career purposes is far higher among the younger age groups, while the oldest students are more likely to study for interest. Employer support is more commonly given to younger students.

Around 80% of students aged under 26 study to further their careers, whereas only 10% study purely out of interest. The gap between these two proportions narrows as students get older, and the figures for those in their forties are the same, at about 40%. Students aged over 49 overwhelmingly study for interest (70%) rather than for professional reasons (less than 20%).

Just over 60% of students aged under 26 are supported by their employers. By contrast, the 30-39 age group is the most self-sufficient, with only 30% being given time off and help with fees. The figures rise slightly for students in their forties and for those aged 50 or more.(178 words, band 9)

Dear Sir or Madam,

I’m writing to recommend to you the outstanding personality and the super ability for learning of Mr. Robert Jiang.

I got to know Mr. Jiang a few years ago while I was teaching British literature to a class of English majors in which he was a student. His excellent performances on several occasions such as group discussions and open debate really took me by great surprise. Never had I met a young student speaking English so fluently and accurately. His insight into British literature as a whole as well as the perspectives he cut into the analysis of characters in the literature aroused my great curiosity about his first-class and unique capability of doing research work. Later on, upon his completion of the Bachelor degree, he moved on to pursue his study for a Master’s degree in the same field of study and I was very lucky to be his supervisor. Mr. Jiang has always been an honest person. He is very friendly to people and is very easy-going. Many of his classmates have mentioned on different occasions about how helpful he was to them and to which I simply cannot agree more.

In the year 1780, a river that ran/went along the north-south direction stretched through the western periphery/edge of the village. Immediately to its east was a vast expanse/plot/tract of farmland where farmers engaged in agricultural activities. The northeastern corner of the village was occupied by residential buildings that accommodated around 100 families. Overlooking from the homes to the south lay a sprawl of woods that took up almost a quarter of the land area of the village.

By the year 1860, significant/tremendous changes had taken place in the layout of settlements in the village. A bridge was built over the river, facilitating the communications and interactions between people on either side of the river. The area of farmland was halved to give way to the construction of a new road linking the river bank to the homes, whose number also doubled over the span of 80 years to 200. The tract of woodland was also significantly reduced, giving rise to vast areas of open, unused land.

The village indicated clear, visible signs of modern infrastructure in the year 2000. The population increased by nearly twofold, attaining 500. On the previously open land erected schools and sports fields for children to receive education and play sports. A new road was set up to make the travel between residential areas and schools more convenient. Whats more, a line/stretch of shops was established along the eastern river bank in the downstream, heralding the advent of a commercial era. More impressively, a wetland formed at the southern end of the river, providing a shelter for birds in the region that retained the last vestige of the pristine nature amidst the full force of modernization elsewhere.

Dear Sir or Madam,I’m writing to recommend to you the outstanding personality of Miss Jiang Junlei.

I got to know Miss Jiang in 2002 while I was giving a placement test to a group of candidates who applied to our daytime English Intensive Training Program. It happened that she was in the group and she impressed me greatly with her friendly and lovely smile throughout the test. In the following year, whileI was organizing a summer camp program with the participation of about 600 high school students coming from all parts of China, I immediately thought of her. The reason was very simple: she is kind, friendly, patient , helpful andloving, thus well suiting a position as class teacher. Besides, she had some experience in hospital nursing which made my choice of her more reasonable and she proved to me as well as to all my colleagues at the camp that my decision was just too perfect. In fact, I was quite surprised by her interpersonal communication skills with both the students and their parents though she was very young herself at the time.

After the summer camp, she told me that she would go to either Britain or Ireland to study for her bachelor’s degree. I wished her all the best and there she went. We have kept in touch regularly since then through e-mails. Last May, when she broke for the summer vacation , she came to my newdepartment, Onlytoya IELTS &TOEFL Training Centre, to help me with some management and student consulting work. She drafted three cooperation agreements for me, wrote a dozen articles that we used on our website, gave numerous placement tests to our students, and gave an open lecture on studying and living in Ireland to about 400 Toya students. She was very well accepted by all Toya staff members and our students as well and became, indeed, an indispensable assistant to me. Something well worthmentioning from my academic perspective as professor in English linguistics and American literature is that her English was fluent and accurate, which convinced me that she is all quick to learn anything new. She told me that she often helps do quite some organization work at her university and at the Chinese Embassy in Ireland and had done a lot of traveling in Europe. Obviously , these experiences have greatly broadened her vision and enriched her life, making such a valuable asset in every field of work she is going to perform.

All in all, it is both my pleasure and honorto write this recommendationletter for Miss Jiang and I guarantee the truthfulness of all that I have said about her.

Should you have any further inquiries, please feel free to contact me either by e-mail or phone at the following address and number:……
